KANGAROOS SWEPT ASIDE

KANGAROOS SWEPT ASIDE

David Warner hit a magnificent century for Australia but could not prevent South Africa from completing a clean sweep by winning the fifth and final one-day international by 31 runs at Newlands.
Warner hit 173 off 136 balls but received scant support from his teammates as Australia, chasing South Africa's 327 for eight, were bowled out for 296.
South Africa won all five matches in the series, the first time Australia have suffered such a beating in a five-game bilateral series. Australia will retain their number one ranking in one-day internationals, however, with South Africa two points behind in second place.
"Davey was phenomenal but the rest of us didn't stand up," said Australian captain Steve Smith. "Credit to South Africa, we've been outplayed in all the games."
Rilee Rossouw hit 122 and JP Duminy made 73 as South Africa piled up the third-highest total in a one-day international at Newlands, making them firm favourites on a ground where the highest successful run chase was 258.
Warner was dropped by wicketkeeper Quinton de Kock off Kagiso Rabada when he had 11. He went on to play a thrilling innings, hitting 24 fours, and Australia remained in with a chance of victory until he was ninth out with the total on 288, run out by a throw from the point boundary by Imran Tahir, desperate for a risky second run in order to keep the strike.
Leg-spinner Tahir had earlier taken two wickets in his first over, ending an opening stand of 72 between Warner and Aaron Finch, then bowling Smith two balls later.
South African captain Faf du Plessis paid tribute to Warner for an "incredible innings" but said South Africa deserved their series triumph. "At different times different guys stood up. Whatever Australia threw at us we had the answers. I'm very proud of the team."
Mitchell Marsh and Travis Head both made 35 but Australia were not able to stage a big partnership such as the 178 off 170 balls posted by Rossouw and Duminy after South Africa had been struggling at 52 for three.

EASY OUTING FOR DJOKER, MURRAY

EASY OUTING FOR DJOKER, MURRAY

Both feeling refreshed and recharged, Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray each won in straight sets Thursday to reach the quarterfinals at the Shanghai Masters.
The top-ranked Djokovic was broken once in a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Vasek Pospisil, improving his record at the tournament to 26-3. Murray was even better: He won 21 of 22 points on his first serve and made only 10 errors in a 6-1, 6-3 win over 13th-seeded Lucas Pouille.
Both players have said they feel energized this week after taking time off following the US Open.
Djokovic hasn't played at all because of an elbow injury, pulling out of the China Open in Beijing last week. He said he used the time away to recover after a mentally exhausting summer, find more balance in his life, and rediscover his passion for the game.
Djokovic said the rest and mental adjustments are already helping him on the court, too. Despite dropping serve once, he said he played a nearly complete match against Pospisil.
"I was very pleased with the way I have played from the first to last point," Djokovic said. "I don't think I have dropped my level at all."
Murray has played more in recent weeks, leading Britain against Argentina in the Davis Cup semifinals and then capturing the China Open title. But he also had some downtime.
"My body felt so much better after taking like seven, eight days off of complete rest, which I hadn't had for quite a long time," Murray said. "I'm really, really happy and glad now that I did that. It's obviously working out well for me just now."
Murray hasn't dropped a set in his last eight matches, going back to his victory over Guido Pella in the Davis Cup last month.
US Open champion Stan Wawrinka didn't look nearly as fresh on Thursday. The third-seeded Swiss player had 43 unforced errors in a 6-4, 6-4 loss to Gilles Simon.
Sixth-seeded Gael Monfils was knocked out of the tournament, too. He fell to David Goffin 4-6, 6-4, 6-2.
In other matches, Jack Sock notched another breakthrough in what's been his best season on tour, rebounding to beat Milos Raonic 0-6, 6-4, 7-6 (8) and reach his first Masters-level quarterfinal.
Paes-Begemann in final
Tashkent: Leander Paes earned himself a shot at his third ATP Challenger level title of the season by reaching the final of the $125000 Tashkent event with partner Andre Begemann, on Thursday.
The third seeded Indo-German duo annihilated local pair and giant-killers Sanjar Fayziev and Jurabeck Karmov 6-2, 6-0 in the semifinals of the hard court event. Paes and Begemann needed only 42 minutes to win the match, in which they broke their rivals five times.

CHAMPS GET BALL ROLLING

CHAMPS GET BALL ROLLING

Defending champions Chennaiyin FC rode on first-half goals from Hans Mulder and Mehrajuddin Wadoo to beat FC Goa City 2-0 recording their first win in the third edition of Indian Super League, here on Thursday evening.
The goals were scored in the 15th and 26th minute as Marco Materazzi's side now has four points from three games while last year's finalists FC Goa now has suffered three defeats in a row. The win took Chennaiyin to 5th position in the eight-team table while Goa are languishing at the bottom of the heap.
Chennaiyin FC manager Materazzi had told his boys that he wouldn't be around to guide them next season if they do not improve and qualify for the semi-finals.
However it was FC Goa which could have gone ahead when Fulganco Cardozo's long ball was bungled by goalkeeper Karanjit Singh but Reinaldo Oliveira couldn't stay on his feet falling inside the penalty box but referee thought otherwise.
The deadlock was broken in the 15th minute as Mulder collected a ball from Raphael Augusto just outside the box, kept his calm and placed the ball past a diving Goa goalkeeper Laxmikant Kattimani even before the defenders could react.
Chennaiyin made it 2-0 in the 26th minute, this time in fortunate circumstances. Skipper Mehrajuddin was looking to cross the ball inside the goalmouth but instead managed to get a wicked deflection off Goa defender Richard Dumas, which beat Kattimani under the Goa bar again.
FC Goa had their share of chances to claw their way back into the game but lacked sharpness. Rafael Coelho was the most likely player to score in the first 45 minutes. First the Brazilian striker's header from Joffre Gonzalez's cross sailed just wide and then he tried to pick the top corner from a narrow angle but the ball went wide in the 42nd minute.
In the second session, FC Goa chief coach Zico tried to change the equation with a flurry of attacking changes but Chennaiyin FC defended in numbers.
The hosts should have won by a much bigger margin had the strikers kept their cool. Davide Succi had a golden chance to make it 3-0 when Mulder's long overhead ball saw him within touching distance of the goal, only for Kattimani to get a touch.
Then Mulder found Baljit Sahni with another well-measured cross but the Indian striker could only hit the side-netting.
Mumbai take on Kerala
Kerala Blasters FC and Mumbai City FC may have to do without their captains for their next round battle in the Hero Indian Super League at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Kochi, on Friday.
Mumbai City captain Diego Forlan, who was influential in his team's first two victories, sat out of the last clash against NorthEast United FC and has not made the trip to Kerala.
"Diego hasn't travelled with the team. He is working hard on his recovery with our medical staff and we hope that we can have him back fully fit at the earliest," said Mumbai coach Alexandre Guimaraes.
Kerala Blasters have worries of their own. Cedric Hengbart, who captained the side in the last game but limped out midway through injury, has a battle on his hand to recover and declare himself fit for the crucial clash against Mumbai City.
"I don't know to be honest," Kerala Blasters coach Steve Coppell said when asked whether he can count on Hengbart's services for Friday's clash.
"We will wait till the last minute to check his fitness. After the injury (in the last game), I thought he wouldn't be available but he is such a warrior that he is working hard, rehabilitating and trying to make himself available for this match," said the Kerala Blasters manager.
Fortunately for the home side, marquee player Aaron Hughes, a sparkling presence in Northern Ireland's progress to the second round of Euro 2016, has completed his international assignments and is expected to return to the line-up.
Kerala Blasters have just a point from their first three matches and is the only team in the league to have not scored as yet, despite backing from approximately 55,000 supporters for each home game. Coppell said his players are trying hard and a change in fortunes could be just around the corner.
"The players fully understand the responsibility of trying to entertain these fabulous fans and the players went flat out to try and give them the victory that they desire. I personally feel we are very close (to winning). As a team, we are capable of winning five or six matches on the bounce," said Coppell.
Mumbai City FC have made an encouraging start to their league campaign this season. Yet unbeaten, Mumbai City have seven points from their first three matches and even though coach Guimaraes said he was targeting "nine points" from the first three matches, he has plenty to be happy about.

NOW YOU CAN BE CITIZEN OF FIRST SPACE NATION

Now, you can be citizen of first space nation

Scientists Launch Asgardia To Protect Earth, Foster Peace And Open Up Cosmos For Commerce

Scientists have launched the first new space nation.

And anyone can become a citizen of it.

The new space nation of Asgardia hopes to save the human race twice over. First, it will look to protect it from warfare in space; and second it will try and keep humanity safe from the dangers coming from outside of atmosphere, protecting us from threats like space debris and asteroid collisions.

Those behind Asgardia hope that creating the country is the first step of a new era in the space age. And they intend to start that by sending rockets into the sky . The country will send its first satellite into space in 2017. From there, Agardia hopes to “open up access to space for commerce, science and peoples of all countries on earth“. The scientists behind the plan launched it in Paris this week, and named it after the city of skies that was ruled by Odin from Valhalla in Norse mythology .

It is being led by Igor Ashurbeyli, who leads the Aerospace International Research Center in Vienna and is chairman of Unesco's science of space committee. But Asgardia was created in consultation with “globally renowned scientists, engineers, entrepreneurs and legal experts“, according to those behind it.

The country is hoping to become a fully recognised country, said Ashburbeyli. And when it does so it will be able to promote values central to scientists, he claimed.

“Asgardia is a fully-fledged and independent nation, and a future member of the United Nations -with all the attribu tes this status entails,“ he said in a statement. “The essence of Asgardia is `Peace in Space', and the prevention of Earth's conflicts being transferred into space. “Asgardia is also unique from a philosophical aspect --to serve entire humanity and each and everyone, regardless of his or her personal welfare and the prosperity of the country where they happened to be born.“

The country will allow for anyone to apply for citizenship.

“Any human living on Earth can become a citizen of Asgardia,“ the site's citizenship page reads. It includes a link to a form to join the country, which is done just by handing over your first name, last name, email and country .

But the new project also hopes that it can completely change the idea of the nation state. It hopes to create a new framework for how space activities are regulated and owned, changing who's responsible for what goes on there and how it can be governed.

But the project hopes to keep people on Earth more safe, too. One of the project's first initiatives will be to create a protective shield that keeps human kind from “cosmic manmade and natural threats to life on earth such as space debris, coronal mass ejections and asteroid collisions“.

Scientists have warned repeatedly that those threats are being underestimated.Scientists have warned that there are thousands of pieces of debris that could crash down to Earth, and that coronal mass ejections coming from the Sun could potentially wipe out all communications on Earth.

TCS QUARTERLY GROWTH FLAT IN JULY-SEPT

TCS quarterly growth flat in July-Sept

Slowdown In Tech Spends By Banking, Retail Weighs

Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) reported a near-flat sequential dollar revenue growth in the second quarter, its slowest in four quarters -a trend that most of the other leading Indian IT services companies too are expected to witness given the slowdown in technology spends by major industry segments such as banking, financial services and insurance (BFSI).

The company , India's biggest software services exporter, said revenue rose 0.27% to $4.37 billion for the quarter ended September 30, from $4.36 billion in the earlier quarter.
When compared to the same period last year, revenue rose 5.2%. On constant currency (discounting the impact of currency fluctuations), the sequential revenue growth was 1%, which widely missed many analysts' estimates.

“It has been an unusual Q2 for TCS. Growing uncertainties in the environment is creating caution among customers and resulted in holdbacks in discretionary spending this quarter. In addition, volatility in markets like India and Latin America muted revenue growth,“ chief executive N Chandrasekaran said in a statement on Thursday .

Such muted results suggest that Infosys and Wipro, which report results on Friday and next week respectively, too will disappoint. Indian IT companies have eit her lowered their guidance over the year or warned investors of sequential lower revenue due to volatile macroeconomic conditions in Europe post the Brexit vote, currency fluctuations, slower ramp-ups in large deals won previously , and the low interest regime in the US.

TCS had observed last month that discretionary spends on IT were getting delayed, resulting in sequential loss of growth momentum. Chandrasekaran said the softness in the market was expected to continue. “We had a negative surprise from India, with delay in order execution worth Rs 180 crore ($30 million) getting spilled over into the current quarter. That is why growth decelerated by 7.6%,“ he said.

ROSNEFT, OTHERS TO BUY 98% OF ESSAR OIL IN $13BN DEAL

Rosneft, others to buy 98% of Essar Oil in $13bn deal

Transaction Will Help Ruias Reduce Group's Debt Burden

In one of the biggest acquisitions by overseas investors in India, the world's largest publicly traded oil company Rosneft, along with commodities trader Trafigura and Russian fund UCP , is set to acquire a 98% stake in Essar Oil for $12-13 billion (over Rs 80,000 crore).

The transaction involves a takeover of Essar Oil's debt of around $4.5 billion (over Rs 30,000 crore). While the Russian oil giant will hold a 49% stake, Trafigura and UCP will equally split another 49%, leaving 2% with the promoters -the Ruia family , sources familiar with the deal said. The transaction will be formally announced on Saturday on the sidelines of the Brics summit.

The deal puts a seal to India's growing energy ties with Russia and comes at a time when there is a major push to attract overseas investment.Recently, state-run Indian oil companies completed deals worth close to $5 billion in Ros neft's exploration ventures.

Following the acquisition, Rosneft will have a large footprint in India and can hope to take on BP and Shell which are already in the country . In 2011, BP had paid $7.2 billion for a 30% interest in RIL's exploration portfolio, which was the largest ever deal in the oil sector. The government has repeatedly tried to get Saudi Aramco to invest in the country .
The transaction will help Ruias reduce the group's debt burden and focus on Essar Steel, which is also facing financial strain due to the large volume of loan on its books. In recent months, production has been ramped up at the steel company .

A news agency said the deal will be funded by Russia's VTB Capital, part of statecontrolled bank VTB. The VTB Group is under Western sanctions over Russia's role in the Ukraine crisis, which restrict its access to international capital. The deal will include the Vadinar refinery and an associated port. The refining capacity is estimated at 400,000 barrel-per-day and sells fuels through its 2,470 pumps. It is not clear if the pumps are part of the transaction. Oil & Natural Gas Corp, the largest Indian oil and gas explorer, and Hong Kong-listed United Energy Group are among bidders for Bangladesh natural gas assets being sold by Chevron Corp, people with knowledge of the matter said.

United Energy submitted a joint offer with Chinese conglomerate Orient Group, one of the people said. The gas fields, which could fetch as much as $2 billion, have also drawn interest from Brightoil Petroleum Holdings, the people said, asking not to be identified because the information is private.

The Bangladeshi government has also expressed interest in taking over Chevron's interests in the assets, according to the people. No final agreement has been reached with any party , the people said.

Energy companies have announced $43.2 billion of asset sales this year after crude prices fell to the lowest level in more than a decade, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. Chevron, the largest US oil producer after Exxon Mobil Corp, is seeking buyers for Asian geothermal assets that could fetch as much as $3 billion and is also holding talks to sell assets in Indonesia and Thailand, people familiar with the matter said earlier.

The San Ramon, California-based company operates the Bibiyana, Jalalabad and Moulavi Bazar natural gas fields in Bangladesh and sells all the production to state oil company Petrobangla, according to its website. Its net daily production last year averaged 720 million cubic feet of natural gas and 3,000 barrels of condensate.

“We can confirm that Chevron has been in commercial discussions about our interests in Bangladesh,“ Chevron said in an e-mailed statement Thursday .“At this stage, no decision has been made to sell our interests. We will only proceed if we can realize attractive value for Chevron.“

Representatives for ONGC, United Energy , Brightoil Petroleum, the Bangladeshi energy ministry and Petrobangla didn't immediately respond to requests for comment. Calls to Orient Group's general line were unanswered. United Energy agreed to buy BP's exploration and production assets in Pakistan for $775 million in 2010, its first venture in the country.

GROPING REPORTS: DON THREATENS TO SUE DAILY

Groping reports: Don threatens to sue daily

Several women have come forward over the past 24 hours to accuse Donald Trump of pawing or groping them over the years, even as new polls show Hillary Clinton surging to a 15-point lead among women -enough to sink him at the polls.

The Trump campaign and its conservative support base, including the right wing media, has trashed the charges, dismissing them as “fabrications“ by the liberal media, but coming on the heels of Trump's own bragging of assaulting women, the allegations are seen as credible.

“He was like an octopus, his hands were everywhere,“ Jessica Leeds, one of the women who claimed to be at the wrong end of Trump's attention told the New York Times. Now 74, Leeds said Trump began pawing her on a flight in 1980 and described how she bolted from the first class cabin to the back of the plane to escape him.

Leeds, and Rachel Crooks, another woman who related a similar experience to NYT when she was a 22-year old receptionist in a realty firm, said they did not make a hue and cry about it as such behaviour was considered normal in that era, but they told family and friends about it immediately . Even as the NYT story was splashing through social media, more women including a journalist -came forward with similar charges, shaking the Trump campaign to its foundation. Meanwhile, another videotape surfaced of a Trump interview in 1992 in which he is heard boasting that he is going to be dating a girl who was only about 10 then in another decade.

At the time Trump was in his mid-40s and had been divorced from his first wife, Ivana, and was dating Marla Maples, who was to become his second wife. The footage shows Trump asking a young girl: “Are you going up the escalator?“ while both are out of view. “Yeah,“ she replies.Trump then boasts: “I'm going to be dating her in 10 years, can you believe it?“ The Trump campaign's response to the stories is predictable -it is all a liberal media conspiracy to destroy him.

Trump himself threatened NYT with a lawsuit while denying its story to a reporter who called him for his version, and telling her “you are a disgusting human being“, when she questioned him. His spokeswoman Katrina Piersen said the women had come forward with the charges because they wanted their “15 minutes of fame“, although one of the accusers is now 74.

Trump's legal team later sent a letter to NYT calling the article “reckless, defamatory and constitutes libel per se“ and charged that from the “timing of the article, that this is nothing more than a politically-motivated attempt to defeat Trump's candidacy .“

“To reach back decades in an attempt to smear Trump trvialises sexual assault, and it sets a new low for where the media is willing to go in its efforts to determine this election,“ Trump's communication advisor Jason Miller said in a statement, adding, “It is absurd to think that one of the most recognisable business leaders on the planet with a strong record of empowering women in his companies would do the things alleged in this story , and for this to only become public decades later in the final month of a campaign for president should say it all.“

Trump's candidacy is already in doldrums even without the latest flap, with a section of the Republican Party virtually jettisoning him after disclosure of tapes in which he boasts of his lewd conduct amounting to sexual assault (which he claims was just locker room talk).

Polls following the disclosure show Trump increasingly falling behind Hillary Clinton with both men and women, including those with limited college education who form the core of his support, starting to abandon him.

Trump is already talking about voter fraud and a “stolen election,“ apparently to prepare grounds for his supporters to revolt if he loses. The Republican candidate could still win -if only men voted.

According to a new analysis by Nate Silver of fivethirtyeight.com, Hillary Clinton trails Trump by an average of 5 points among men, enough to get him 350 electoral votes to Hillary's 188. But Clinton leads Trump by 15 points among women -enough to rout him 458-80 if only women voted.

Even with both voting, Clinton is now comfortably ahead, with Silver putting her chances of moving into the White House at over 80%.

50% RISE IN DIABETES DEATHS ACROSS INDIA OVER 11 YEARS

50% RISE IN DIABETES DEATHS ACROSS INDIA OVER 11 YEARS

With a genetic predisposition brought to the fore by changing lifestyles, deaths due to diabetes increased 50 per cent in India between 2005 and 2015, and is now the seventh-most common cause of death in the country, up from 11th rank in 2005, according to data published by the Global Burden of Disease (GBD).

Ischemic heart disease continues to be the highest cause of death, followed by chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, cerebrovascular disease, lower respiratory infection, diarrhoeal diseases and tuberculosis.

In 2015, 346,000 people died of diabetes, which caused 3.3 per cent of all deaths that year, with an annual increase of 2.7 per cent from 1990, according to the GBD study.

Nearly 26 people die of diabetes per 100,000 population; diabetes is also one of the top causes of disability and accounts for 2.4 per cent of the disability-adjusted life-years lost (sum of years lost due to disability or premature death due to the disease).

There are 69.1 million people with diabetes in India, the second-highest number in the world after China, which has 109 million people with diabetes. Of these, 36 million cases remain undiagnosed, according to a 2015 Diabetes Atlas released by the International Diabetes Federation (IDF). Nearly nine per cent in the age group of 20-79 have diabetes.

The figures are alarming since diabetes is a chronic disease that not just affects the pancreas' ability to produce insulin but impacts the entire body. Complications caused due to diabetes include heart disease, stroke, kidney failure, vision loss and neuropathy or nerve damage leading to leg amputation.

Unlike other countries, where a majority of people with diabetes are over 60 years old, the prevalence in India is among the 40-59 years age group, affecting productivity of the population.

"Diabetes strikes Indians a decade earlier than the world," Anoop Misra, chairman, Fortis Centre of Excellence for Diabetes, Metabolic Diseases and Endocrinology, New Delhi, told IndiaSpend. "This causes reduced productivity, increased absenteeism in working population and gives more time for complications to arise."

Indians are especially predisposed to diabetes due to social and genetic reasons. Peculiar genetic composition of Indians known as "Asian Indian Phenotype" makes them appear thin but with fat depositions around their internal organs.

It makes them prone to greater abdominal fat, insulin resistance, higher levels of bad fat and increased chances of suffering from diabetes and coronary artery disease.

Lifestyle changes with reduced physical activity and carbohydrate-rich diets, along with environmental factors, are increasing India's diabetes burden, IndiaSpend reported in June 2015.

It is estimated that diabetes patients in urban areas spend Rs 10,000 and patients in rural areas spend Rs 6,260 every year on treatment, according to a 2013 study published by The Association of Physicians of India.

Since most of the healthcare cost is borne out of pocket in India, those in lower economic groups have to bear the greatest burden. Urban poor spend as much as 34 per cent while rural poor spend 27 per cent of their income on diabetes treatment, the study found.

India is predicted to have 123 million diabetes cases aged between 20 and 79 by 2040, according to estimates by IDF. "We need a national campaign on the level of pulse polio to tackle diabetes, it is soon going to be a problem bigger than TB, HIV and malaria together," Misra said.

Even though diabetes features in the National Health Mission's National Programme for Prevention and Control of Cancer, Diabetes, Cardiovascular Diseases and Stroke for district-level intervention to prevent non-communicable diseases, it needs to do more to screen, create awareness and monitor and treat the disease to stem the tide.

NTPC PROJECTS AWAIT ‘ACHHEY DIN’ IN JHARKHAND

NTPC PROJECTS AWAIT ‘ACHHEY DIN’ IN JHARKHAND

More than 16 years ago when the former Prime Minister, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, had laid the foundation stone of NTPC Power in Tandwa in 1998 people of the region had not imagined such gloomy days for them ahead. Blame it on unhealthy politics or the inefficient governance in Jharkhand but the plants are yet to take shape and begin production, let alone the inconvenience and burgeoning cost being borne by the public sector unit.
Adding more to the misery the not a single ounce of coal has been extracted from the coal mines near Badkagaon in Hazaribagh till now and efforts are still on to bring the things on track. Local residents say that since the name of former Union Minister Yashwant Sinha was attached with the projects so the UPA Government not only neglected it but tried to close the NTPC projects in Jharkhand.
Further, according to locals, mining work has not yet started in the coal blocks allotted to NTPC at Barkagaon and Keredari Blocks due to consistent disturbance by local MLA of the constituency. The newly elected MLA of Barkagaon is Nirmala Devi of Congress, whose husband Yogendra Sao a former Minister is languishing in jail for his alleged links with extremists.
Sao is said to be the main figures who had disturbed and delayed this much needed developmental project and even now he is indirectly putting hindrance in the works of NTPC. MLA Nirmala Devi and her supporters have stopped the works of coal project for over 20 days. They have also stopped the construction work of quarters for the displaced seeking unreasonably high compensation from the public sector unit, said locals.
NTPC officials at the Badkagaon site revealed on the condition of anonymity that the Hazaribagh district administration was also very unsupportive and the officials, in spite of making an arrest of the MLA and her supporters for putting obstacles in the works of the Government of India owned enterprise, have permitted her to hold protest near the construction site of the quarters for the displaced.
Meanwhile, a high level meeting of district officials of Hazaribagh and Chatra districts and officers of NTPC was called by Divisional Commissioner Surendra Singh Meena on Wednesday. In the meeting Meena directed the officials to increase the pace of land acquisition for NTPC. After going through the rehabilitation package and other facilities announced by NTPC Meena concluded that some people were misleading the land owners so it was necessary that a joint team of NTPC and administration should meet with the land owners individually to get them acquainted with the actual rehabilitation package they will get.
Surprisingly, in this meeting no one raised a question that how the agitation is going on at the sites of NTPC without local administration permission and if permission has been given to the agitators to sit on others land then why not it should be withdrawn.

BETWEEN NOW & 2030 MENTALLY ILLNESS WILL CUT INDIAN ECONOMIC GROWTH BY $11 TRILLION

BETWEEN NOW & 2030 MENTALLY ILLNESS WILL CUT INDIAN ECONOMIC GROWTH BY $11 TRILLION

India is one of the first countries to develop a national mental health programme in the early 1980s and yet the   country is  witnessing growing cases of mental illness. When it comes to ensure treatment and institutional capacity to integrate mentally ill in the society, sadly it ranks 11th among 15 nations in the Asia-Pacific region.
This has been revealed by the Asia-Pacific region Mental Health Integration Index which was released recently. The report cautioned that between now and 2030, mentally illness will reduce economic growth by $11 trillion in India.
India figured in the lower half for each of the indices just behind China and Thailand, while Australia and New Zealand claimed top position - Pakistan and Indonesia came at the bottom, said the study undertaken by the Economic Intelligence Union (EIU) and commissioned and funded by Janssen Asia Pacific, a division of Johnson & Johnson.
It noted that within months of India adopting its new Mental Health Policy “its total health budget was slashed by 20 per cent”. Worse still, “lack of institutional capacity meant that even the restricted funding available, was not always spent,” it said.
In India in 2012-2013, “only 42 per cent of the budget for the National Mental Health Programme was used,” the report said.
The index relied on four major indicators - provision of a stable family environment, work opportunities, access to health care and social services, governance, human rights and combating stigma.
In countries, such as Australia and Singapore, under half of those with a mental illness receive medical care, while only one-tenth get so in India and China.
George Institute for Global Health India’s Deputy Director and Head of Research and Development, Dr Pallab Maulik, who was one of the advisors on the study, talked about one particular project ‘SMART Mental Health’ in West Godavari in Andhra Pradesh in which he is involved.
“When we started implementing the project, we realised that there was little or no awareness about common mental disorders in the community, and systems of mental health care were almost non-existent,” he said.
After the village level health workers and doctors were sensitized, we found that there was a relative increase in service use in the mentally ill population…This shows that models of community-based care involving technology and appropriate training of primary care health workers can help put the focus on mental health in rural areas, increase screening and facilitate mental health care” said Dr. Maulik.
Magnitude of mental illness is on increase in India. As per a latest countrywide National Institute of Mental Health & Neurosciences (Nimhans) study at least 13.7 per cent of India's general population has been projected to be suffering from a variety of mental illnesses and 10.6 per cent of this requires immediate intervention.
