Indo-Pak drama spills over to British TV
Pakistan-born actor Marc
Anwar sacked from British soap Coronation Street after he posted abusive tweets
against India
The script of Britain's
longest-running soap opera, Coronation Street, is being hastily rewritten. The
reason is that the upcoming track of the show prominently featured
Pakistan-born actor Marc Anwar, who has now been sacked. In a statement, the
channel bosses said that Anwar, who joined the show in February 2014, has been
sacked “with immediate effect“ after he tweeted racist and abusive comments
against Indians on Friday .The statement said, “We are deeply shocked by the
entirely unacceptable, racially offensive comments made on Twitter by Marc
Anwar. We have talked to Marc and, as a consequence of his comments, he will
not be returning to Coronation Street with immediate effect.“
According to some reports,
Anwar's character, Sharif Nazir, will be on screen for a few episodes since the
storyline features him so heavily that it won't be possible to edit Sharif out
of immediate episodes at this late stage. The show's team will be rewriting
weeks' worth of future storylines and scripts to explain Sharif's sudden
disappearance.
A source told a UK tabloid
that “the whole crew has been gagged and put on lock down after the racist
tweets scandal.“
Anwar's tweets came after
Pakistani actors were told to leave India by the MNS.
