Jilted lover pushes woman off balcony

Turning down the marriage proposed by a friend she met on Facebook proved costly for a 24-year-old woman in outer Delhi's Avantika Enclave. On Monday evening, the rebuffed man and some of his family members allegedly pushed the woman off the balconyof her second-floor residence for refusing to either marry him or pay the Rs 1lakh he was demanding from her.

While the victim, who sustained multiple fractures, is fighting for life in Bhim Rao Ambedkar Hospital, police have registered a case of attempt to murder against Amit, the accused, after detaining him.

Recalling the circumstances that led to Monday's incident, the woman's younger brother said that she befriended Amit on Facebook two years ago. “After a few weeks of friendship, Amit proposed marriage to her, but since she could not take a decision on her own, she shared this with the family ,“ said the brother, a Class XII student. “The family did not flatly turn down the man's proposal. We first carried out a background check. When we found that he was an unemployed, habitual drinker, my sister, on our advice, asked Amit to stop pestering her. This is what the man could not digest.“

Even after rejecting Amit, the woman, who worked as a beautician, was often tense and told the family that the man continued to pursue her.“Around two months ago, she told us that Amit had asked her to either marry him or pay him Rs 1 lakh,“ revealed the brother. “If she didn't, he warned her, she should be ready to face the consequences.“ Thinking the threat was only a ploy to make the 24-year-old to give in, the family did not pay too much attention.

However, on Monday , around 3.30pm, Amit called her and said he would reach her home for her final answer. Wary about Amit's motives, the family lodged a complaint at the Mangolpuri police station.“Police asked us to inform them when Amit arrived,“ said the brother.
Around 6.15pm Amit reached the woman's house with two of his sisters and his nephew. “While my mother was talking to four of them, she sent my sister to bring them some water. Amit and one of his sisters followed her into the kitchen,“ narrated the brother. “They had an argu ment and the two of them suddenly threw her off the balcony and all four then fled from the house.“ The youngster broke his leg while trying to chase his sister's assailants.

Vikramjit Singh, DCP (Outer), said that a case of attempt to murder had been registered against Amit. “ A crime and forensic team has collected evidence from the spot, and neighbours and potential witnesses are being questioned to determine what exactly happened,“ said Singh.

What worries the family members now is that the injuries suffered by the victim may leave her paralysed or disabled for life if she survived. They said that the doctors had told them that the next 24 hours would be critical for the victim.
