JAVADEKAR ROOTS FOR
WOMEN EDUcation AT JAMIA
Union HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar rooted
for women’s education and said the Modi Government has paid special emphasis on
education of girls through its popular campaign of ‘Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao’.
Inaugurating ‘Begum Hazarat Mahal Hostel’ for girl students at
Jamia Millia Islamia on Wednesday, the HRD Minister told the students about the
Central Government increasing the supernumerary seats in technical colleges for
students from Jammu and Kashmir from 2 to 10.
“Modi Government’s stand is that every girl must get education and
shall actively become part of the progress of this country. I am happy
that women took ‘Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao’.initiative forward. There were some
places in India with skewed gender ratio due to female foeticide and the
positive news is it is changing slowly,” Javadekar said.
Emphasising on women’s empowerment, he said about 100 years ago it
was impossible for girls to get an education and this resulted in “the country
losing out enormous potential.
Highlighting that India was all about unity in diversity, he said
Jamia was a perfect example where students from different States live together.
“Jamia hosts students from Kashmir to Kerela, this is what one has
to learn. Diversity in unity is what India stands and teaches us... There is
tolerance within that we respect your ritual and you respect our ritual. This
way we follow our own rituals. This kind of education takes place by
interacting with each other, outside the classrooms. Hostel is a community
learning platform,” he added.
Speaking about Prime Minister Scholarship Scheme for Students
(PMSSS), the HRD Minister said the scheme has been stabilised.
“Earlier, there were only 2 supernumerary seats for students from
J&K in institutions outside the State but now with the number going up to
10, there is a sizeable number of students who are availing this scholarship,
which amounts to nearly 2 lakh per student per year. During the unrest in
Kashmir, the students still came out and took admission wherever they could and
this is what will strengthen the unity of this country. If there is pain
anywhere, it will hurt us because the entire country belongs to us.
He said, “All religions teach brotherhood, non-violence, truth and
compassion towards others. Real education is respecting each other’s culture. I
believe all religions teach live and let live. Education does not only mean to
teach subject related knowledge but makes a good human being and this is what
Jamia is has been doing all these years.”
