TECH ZONE - Wi-Fi at all Metro stations by 2017
Delhi Metro is on track to achieving its goal of
connecting all its stations digitally by 2017. After signing up with RailTel to
provide free Wi-Fi services at five stations earlier this year, DMRC now plans
to roll out the services at all stations of Phase I and Phase II by next
year end.
At
present, commuters can avail of free Wi-Fi at four stations -Rajiv Chowk,
Kashmere Gate, Hauz Khas and Central Secretariat. The service will be available
at the Vishvidhyalaya station soon, said a Delhi Metro official. While the MoU
to this effect was signed in May last year, it was only in the second half of
2016 that the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation rolled out its Wi-Fi
programme.Riders can log on for half an hour of free internet services at the
above-mentioned stations. After the 30 minutes, the usual browsing charges will
apply .
A Delhi
Metro spokesperson said, “All stations of Phase I (59) and Phase II (85) will
be Wi-Fi-enabled by 2017end.“ Delhi Metro plans to provide Wi-Fi at the
stations on the Airport Express line by October.
DMRC also
plans to roll out Wi-Fi services on its trains but this, officials said, would
be implemented at a later stage. To avail of free internet, riders need to
access the network called “MetroFi“.
